Community Integration

Encouraging Community Integration

The Empowerment Center is committed to helping individuals with disabilities find a sense of belonging within the community. By providing access to valued social settings and activities, the Center ensures that participants can contribute meaningfully and develop the skills needed to fully participate in society. This involvement not only enhances their problem-solving abilities but also deepens their understanding of various issues, fostering communication and positive decision-making skills.

Developing Safe and Appropriate Behavior

The Community Engagement Group focuses on improving personal judgment and reasoning regarding appropriate and safe behavior in public settings. Participants are exposed to various community resources, including public libraries, grocery stores, parks, shopping malls, and more. These outings, which occur weekly, allow participants to learn and implement skills in real-world settings, with the guidance of Empowerment Center staff who understand their unique needs.

Community Activities Include:

Visits to public libraries, grocery stores, parks, and shopping malls

Recreational outings such as movies, bowling, plays, and festivals

Building Essential Community Skills

Community Awareness and Integration skills cover a wide range of areas, including self-awareness, behavioral management, coping skills, respecting personal boundaries, following directions, money management, and socialization in different environments. Participants are encouraged to apply these skills consistently during outings, with staff providing support, prompts, and redirection as needed. Before participating in community integration outings, participants must complete additional training in Social Skills, Independent Living, Health & Wellness, and Vocational Skills.
